Looking to devote time to your writing this summer? Professors Rose Marie Ward (Kinesiology and Health) and Monica Schneider (Political Science) are organizing Summer Writing Groups for graduate students and faculty. An extension of the Howe Center’s very popular Writing Boot Camps, the Summer Writing Groups offer participants an excellent opportunity to advance their work on their theses, dissertations, research and creative articles, grant proposals, and other writing projects.

Rose Marie and Monica will arrange writing groups in Oxford and Cincinnati. Writing groups will have meetings weekly (or more often) dedicated to writing. We will coordinate schedules and the location.

We are arranging two types of writing groups:

Option One – Dedicated time to write (no internet, no distractions)

Writers–international, national, and local–will present their work at the Oxford Writing Festival from March 26 – March 29. The festival has been planned and hosted by the Miami student organization Students for the Promotion of Writing, founded by Howe Center for Writing Excellence consultant Megan Dincher.

Dincher, the organization’s president, noted that attending writing festivals while in high school inspired her to bring one to Miami students and citizens of Oxford. “Our main goal is to show that writing is more than just writing a book,” she explains, and to reach that goal, the festival will host a variety of writers, including lyricists, columnists, and performance poets. “Throughout the festival week, we’ll have student presenters, guest presenters, faculty presenters, and presenters from the Oxford community.”

In addition to writing presentations and discussions, the festival will host a variety of workshops. The festival runs daily from noon to 8:00 pm, with most events taking place in Shriver MPR. And, Dincher says, “There’s something going on pretty much the whole time.”

The festival is free and open to the public. For a full schedule, go to http://spw.mugroups.org.

“We ran the pilot for Quick Questions last semester and it was relatively successful,” said Josh Kiger, Student Manager of the Center. ”We were booked and we didn’t have a whole lot of openings for consultations,” he explained. Kiger pointed out that the drop-in service eliminates the need for writers to try and find an opening on the schedule, “is quick and efficient for writers,” and encourages them to take advantage of the open accessibility of consultants.

Have a Quick Question about your writing? A Howe Writing Center consultant can provide the answer!
